Masonry is a broad term for various types of building blocks that are held together by mortar in order to form a wall. Masonry is a widely used building method that requires cleaning and restoration over time. Masonry cleaning is easy to perform unless the masonry contains white stains called efflorescence. Efflorescence typically requires sandblasting or acid cleaning to effectively restore masonry to its original condition. 

Masonry restoration often includes tuck pointing or caulking to renew the waterproof capabilities of the masonry wall. Because of cost savings, masonry restoration is preferred over masonry replacement.

After any masonry cleaning or masonry restoration procedure, we recommend sealing the masonry units in order to prevent biological staining and water penetration. In most cases, masonry maintenance procedures should be utilized to protect the masonry restoration investment. This is especially true with waterproofing brick. Waterproofing brick, especially the mortar, reduces the likelihood of stains developing in the future.
